Six ancient Egyptian tombs have been uncovered in the area around the city of Luxor, archaeologists report. The tombs date back to between the 16th and 11th centuries B.C. and include wall paintings and hieroglyphs.

Most of the tombs are not fully excavated yet, but one is thought to belong to a royal scribe named Userhat, according to Egypt's Minister of Antiquities Mohamed Ibrahim. Another tomb may belong to a judge named Userhatu.

The discovery was made by an American archaeological team working with the Egyptian government at the site of Dra Abu-el-Naga, on the west bank of the Nile River opposite Luxor. The researchers said they expect more tombs will be found in the area. [Photos: The Valley of the Kings Near Luxor]

"We expect more similar discoveries in this area as it seems that we are touching on a dense necropolis," project manager John Coleman told Ahram Online.

Ancient Egyptians buried their dead in tombs carved into cliffs or build pyramids from mud bricks. The pharaohs were buried in pyramids of stone, some of which still stand today.
